My brother in law is going salmon fishing in Kiwani (hope spelling is correct). My question is being we have not been here fishing for salmon before is there any suggestions on tackle or presentation you would recommend. we will be heading out next thursday for the weekend. If there are any suggestions on somewhere to pick up takle in that area, i would be up for suggestions on that also, since we don't have much for salmon takle around here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

About 10 miles north in algoma they have a good selection of stuff in a couple of stores. One is called the hardware store and I don't remember the other they are almost across the street from each other. I was there a few weeks ago and most were caught on dipsey/dodger/flies

what do you have for a boat and how is it rigged? I would get an assortment of glow spoons and flasher fly combos. Blue/crushed ice opti enticers and aqua howie flies worked the best for us as well as glow needlenose and moonshine spoons. Make sure you have at least a couple rods set up for dipsys and a lead core rod can be very productive as well. There are a lot of posts in this forum about fishing michigan for salmon, do a little searching and i am sure you will find what you need.

i would second the algoma hardware store, and there is also a new shop called the bait bow across the street from it that has more than a few hard to find items.

I don't know where you are located, but if you are near duluth/superior at any time stop my marine general in duluth, they have a ton of gear that will help on your trip as well.

Jiggin, there is a bait/tackle shop in Kewaunee. I can't remember the name but the main drag runs north-south through town and there is a road that runs west. If you go down that road about a mile there is a grocery store, gas station, subway, and tackle shop. They can provide a few things but their selection is not great. The hardware store others mentioned is on the main strip in downtown ALgoma on the west side of the road...they have a great selection of flys, flashers, etc. I have fished both Algoma and Kewaunee quite a bit and done well at both locations. I prefer the launch, parking, and cleaning station at Kewaunee but do not like the xtra time it takes to get out from the channel to the lake. There are generally fewer crowds on the lake at Kewaunee and we tend to fish there when we want to run some board lines for steelhead as well as downriggers. ALgoma has more croweded parking but you get on the lake right away. Also, the fish cleaning station can be quite crowded and I have always found it too crowded to comfortably run boards when I have been there. You'll do well in either location although I have generally done better in ALgoma

Hey Jiggin' it was fun fishing with you guys. I'm still popping fuses on my marine band so looks like another trip to the shop. Sorry I couldn't chat on the water, but there was anough entertainment on the radio anyway. Maybe we can make another trip this fall. We're headed to the 'sippi tomorrow, so tell your friends at work to turn their heads if they see a Ranger flying through town. Later.

I talked to a buddy that does electrical work on vehicles and he stated you might have a bad radio unit. He stated that a bad ground shouldn't cause that. I was thinking you might have a nick in the positive wire and its jumping somewhere, but he stated it could be a bad unit. Let me knwo what you find out.
