Johnson 140HP FYI

SteveWilson

Question

If you have a Johnson 140HP 4 stroke (i.e. a Suzuki) that you purchased from Crystal Pierz Marine and you decide to get a different prop, you'll probably need to purchase the proper Johnson/Suzuki prop mounting hardware. I recently replaced the Hustler that was supplied with my rig with a Stainless Steel prop. The spacer washer CP used was a much thicker Mercury spacer to make up for the rather short prop housing that they decided to rig their Johnson 140's with. Anyhow, a Johnson or Suzuki dealer can get the correct part for you (Suzuki part is 57630-90J00).

What pitch prop were you running with your Hustler prop? I have the same motor and I am looking at going stainless also. Which stainless prop did you end up getting and what was the pitch? Makes a difference what boat you have. I have a 1700 Fishermen. the 13.25 X 21 prop works for me.

I really like the Johnson (aka Suzuki) 140HP 4 stroke, it's quiet, starts right up, is fairly miserly with the fuel, and looks good. If I were buying my boat again I would probably opt for more horsepower (say 175hp) but the engine itself is very good, I would go with a Suzuki 4 stroke again, no problem.

As for props I had the 13.25/21 Hustler on my 1800 Fisherman. If you need a spare drop me a note. Anyhow, talking with Dan's Southside Marine they've tested a number of stainless props and they prefer to rig theirs with the Suzuki stainless (IIRC 14x20). I purchased a Siletto Advantage from Jay Soderbloom in the 14x20 size and had the chance to use it the other night. Holeshot - bam, hit throttle, boat pops up on plane in a heartbeat. My wife and kids all noticed it and commented on how fast the boat went on plane. There is also less noise with this prop than the Hustler. As for speed my Hustler maxed out at 38mph GPS @5800 rpm on clear water and a full load. With the Stiletto, a bit of headwind, and a bit of chop I reached 43mph GPS (into the wind) @5900-6000 rpm. So yeah I'm very happy with the new prop.

I also changed out props on my kicker motor going from a 9.25/9 3 blade to a 10/5 4 blade Solas high thrust blade from PropMD (Minnesota Propeller in Cannon Falls). My max speed went down from 6mph to 5.5 mph, I have no idea what my rpms increased to so I'm comfortable going less than WOT @5mph. But the good news is that when I go in gear off idle I can troll at .7mph or with a bit of gas 1.3-2mph which is what I wanted, a lot better that the 1.7mph at idle. Also with the larger diameter and 4 blades the boat steers much better. I got a great price on that prop and it's doing exactly what I want.

Bass as of right now you can't get a 140 Johnson 4 stroke. But you still can get the Suzuki one which is the same. Johnson I think it was in '05 quit buying from suzuki and I don't think you can even get a Johnson 4 stroke anymore. I just got a 140 this spring and it has been great. I love the quiteness of it and it move the boat along great. When we were at Lac Seul this summer the other boat in our party had a 75 Merc. 2 stroke and it seemed like they both took about the same amount a fuel every morning when I filled them up.

Glad to hear you are happy with your prop. Can I ask what you had to pay for that prop? Been looking at the Turning point stainless in the 13.25 X 21.

As far as the motor goes. I love it. I have put on around 700 miles on it this summer and last and have not had a lick of trouble whatsoever. Runs quiet, reliable starter, and pretty easy on gas. Pushes my 1700 Lund Fishermen around 44MPH.

Well I would give Jay Soderbloom a call, tell him what you're thinking and give him your rpm@WOT. Mine was on the low side of the range which is why I went from a 21 to a 19 (I phone ordered a Turbo 13.25x19) and then the manufacturer shipped a 14x20 for me to try which is a better size for the mid-size Suzuki's (i.e DF115 and DF140 Suzuki or Johnson) - works great. As for price I paid $240 plus shipping
