Old baseball player question.

So I was playing baseball on the XBOX at my buddies house last night. I was the Twins and he was the cooperstown legends. The Twins were giving his hall of fame team a whooping to remember, but that is beyond the point. In the 7th inning, he went to the bullpen and substituted in Catfish Hunter. That got me to thinking, is Catfish Hunter his real name? Or was he an avid catfisherman and hunter that just used a nickname as his professional playing name? If anyone knows I am really curious.

Thanks,

Ryan

His real name is James Augusta Hunter.Charley Finely his first owner gave him the name catfish because he would tell people how he use to catch catfish in the back woods of North Carolina where he was born and raised.

He did love to hunt and fish and in his earlier years thought of being a game warden before baseball.

Thats all I could find on him.

I knew it was Jim "Catfish" Hunter, but didn't know how he got the nickname.

I did hear that Jim "Mudcat" Grant got his nickname from a manager or announcer or somebody & it seems like he didn't really know where the name came from. Whoever it was that came up with it just thought it sounded cool & it stuck.
