Agape And Me...

These last few days I got to spend some time on the water with a good friend, Wayne Ek of Agape Fishing Guides . Fishing in my area (the other end of the state from Wayne) had been decent, but not great, and I was in need of setting the hook on a few piggie largies. Wayne and I, are like bitter enemies at sport shows (ok, we still love each other) but work for totally different companies. I for Shimano and Mr.Twister and he for Quantum and Strike King. Needless to say, we do quite a big of friendly ribbing, but most of our time spent together has been on a sales floor somewhere in the state. Well, we were finally able to spend a few days in a boat together, and I am so glad I did.

Wayne is a great guy. If you ever are in the mood to get a guide and really want to learn something while catching a lot of fish, Wayne would be one of my first choices.

Fishing was in his words, “Ok.”

I would describe it as nothing short of “Awesome.”

Our first day (Tuesday) took us to a very stained body of water. Shallow Running Crankbaits and Jig and Pig were the order of the day, with a few fish coming on topwaters as well. Shallow cover (less than 3 feet) seemed to hold all the fish. We only boated about 20 fish, but the size was amazing.. Wayne boated a fish at 5 lbs.

I had one on that was larger than his (alright, pretty sure it was larger than his) but decided not to show him up in his boat and let the fish off my hook at the side of the boat. 8-)

However, I did manage a fish well over 3 lbs....

Day 2 was much nicer to us. We fished a slightly more clear body of water with quite a population of smallies. Wayne and I put a mess of smallies in the two to four pound range in the boat.

All caught on topwaters, during the first few hours of the day. Once the sun came up, we put the Texas rigs to the test and continued to boat a mixed bag of largies and smallies.

This is Waynes big fish of the day

Wayne, thanks for the great trip. I’ll be counting the days ‘til I can get my dollar back.

And a Splash Good-Bye!

Great recap/story Deitz! Looks like some awesome fish were caught! Those smallies look like a blast! Also glad to see Wayne took it easy on you grin.gif

I've had the privilege of meeting Wayne, and while I haven't fished with him, I can still tell you one thing that's for sure... you're going to have a lot of fun regardless of how the fishing turns out when fishing with Wayne! smile.gif

Deitz:

Great pics, esp. of that smallie on the PopR? When are you going to get me a sweet gamma visor smile.gif

Wayne put a buddy of mine on some fish earlier in the year. His comments and suggestions were right on the money. Wayne's your man for bass in Alex!

Looks like a fun couple of days! Water temps are high, so I'm laying off the muskies, time to go bassin'!!

I like the Twister visor, I have that one too!! What were they, only 8 bucks with the FM special?

Off to the bass forum to see what's working!

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
