permanents fish house floor and metal skids???

I am stongly considering building a permanent fish house this fall. I will probably go with something around the 10x20 range. Do people generally build the floors out of 2x6's on something that size. Another question I have is how much would a pair metal tube skids run, and where would you find them?

Reynolds, Many years ago, my dad and I built a 8'x14' perm. We used 3-4x8 timbers for skids. after a while, we came across some aluminum channel that we put on the bottom of those skids. That did wonders fo the moving of the house on the ice, but it put the cabosh on sliding it across any gravel or blacktop. If you have a salvage yard nearby, check if they have any 3"or 3 1/2" "boiler flue" in stock. The flue I've seen has had an 90deg elbow on the ends that looks like it would ride/slide across the ice. Though you might want to check that there's not too much scale on the tubes.

i have 2 1/2 inch well pipe on my 7 1/2 by 12 the less area to ice the easier it is to move as far as your floor. with a ten foot span i would recomebd that every four foot you use a micro-lam 2x6 by this i mean take your 2x6s and sandwhich inbetween them plywood glue and screw the heck out if iti would do this to the center sections of your joists and piece the ends in with scraps as i dont think you can get 10 foot sheets of plywood. and i would use at least 1/2 inch plywood with a span like that i have this done on my shack and after 6 years on the ice it has very little sag. good luck on your build and be sure to have a good floor plan before you start. i designed mine for four years before i built it. ... paul

I have seen them a couple different ways and the most promising in my eyes was a frame that was all steel.

They used 2X3 rectangular tube to make the floor and welded skids right to the floor frame.

The skids were 5" diameter pipe.

I would think any welding shop could work that out for you, the only trick would be getting that massive frame to the lake. I know you can oversize road permits from the DMV vor very little $$.

I built a 10x20 last year with steel skids. The skids i put on are 4x4 x 24', I purchased them from the owner of the resort on Millelacs. I also used 2x6 for the floor joists, topped it with 5/8" marine grade plywood then put down 1" rigid foam insulation topped with 3'8" marine plywood. I did reinforce the center main walking areas, but it is solid as heck and nice and warm. Any questions give me a shout and I would love to help you out. [email protected]
