figuring out motor year

OK all I have is the serial number of the motor. Is there any HSOforum I can use to find out what year the motor is? and are all 80 horse motors the same for lower units? (as long as they are the same motor(merc to merc, johnson to johnson, and so on)

I call a dealer to find out the year, they alot of times ask for the model number too so you should get that too.

I think that comes up as a Mercury 700 70hp outboard 1977
