bgreen82
looking to get out for some channels this weekend, and i want to try some chicken liver. can you buy them at cub and what size do you cut them into?
Katman
check at the chicken section of the meats. They come in round containers. They only come in one size. Make sure they're not frozen. Sometimes they have frozen ones.
HuskerBen
And you don't have to cut them at all. Just tear them if you want a smaller piece. They're tricky to keep on the hook, so you might want to get some cheesecloth or pantyhose to wrap around it.
hammerfive
The only problem with liver is keeping it on the hook. It seems to get a lot of bites but if you miss, you are out of bait. I have had good luck lately on cut suckers.
graybeard2
In my experience, if you want a smaller piece use a sharp knife or scissors to cut them. Soon as you try to tear them, they turn to mush. They'll stay much firmer if you cut them. Thread them on a #1 baitholder or a #4 or #6 treble, and they'll stay on pretty decent. If you lose some, call it chum. Just a heads up though, in Minnesota treble hooks aren't legal to use unless part of a "lure".
graybeard2
Oops, sorry about that, forgot about the trebles in Minnesota. Actually, I use regular hooks most of the time now anyway. Doesn't hold the liver quite as well, but a lot easier to unhook the fish.
CRAKSHOT
Cure them with garlic salt, the salt toughens them up,and they work better than plain ones..
Katman
Or nuke them in the microwave for 1 minute..or less if you have a strong one. That'll firm them up a bit.
moosebaytripper
you can also use panty hose to keep it all together. cut a piece of hose and put liver inside bring the sides of the hose up and hook on hook. this is how everyone that I fished with in north carolina did it. you will get some real strange looks at the grocery store though. AllSkills
I seem to be having more miss strikes with chicken liver... It seems to get the bites, but hooking the fish seems to be more difficult compared to my other baits that i have used for catfishes... I just want to be able to hook every single cats that bites...
