'97 honda motor charging problem

My father has a 1997 90HP Honda four stroke. The motor doesn't charge the battery at all. I haven't been up to look at it yet, and would like to know where to start. I know this is a dumb question, but what do they use to charge the battery? I didn't think they used alternators in boat motors?

Don't know about a 97 90hp Honda, but mine has a 70 amp alternator on it.

On my 90 hp merc it was the voltage reg. that was bad. Otherwise it could be the stator coil. Not sure if a 4 stroke has these.
