Summer Bass

Recommended Posts

Hi all

First I have been fishing for 2 years or trying to fish. I fish with 12 year old daughter most of time. My luck is ok early in year but after spawn no luck. I live close to Demonterville & Olson Lake so that’s where I go. Just don’t know what to look for when fishing deep water. Have depth finder don’t know how to read when weeds are in deep water. Depth finder is Humming bird wide view. Any help with lures to use and how to set up lures. All I drag in is weeds. Thanks for help in advance!

Hi Ham! I see this was your first post.. smile.gif Here's what I would suggest.. first of all.. give plastics a try.. just browse the bass forum here for "senkos" and "comidas" and "tubes" those sort of things.

And I put this little page together for my brothers you could check out.. some homemade PHOTOS of how to rig plastics- not sure how accurate it is in the 'details' but it shows what is really HOT these days in bass fishing. Maybe someone can suggest changes to that page.. it's for our trip to Quetico in July.. and they have never even heard of plastics. smile.gif

Sly's little plastics tutorial page:

http://www.slyster.com/plastics

Of course there are other plastics.. slamanders.. creatures.. ribbon worms you name it.. my pics only cover the senko and tube.

I would edge out deeper and deeper until the depth is too great for the weeds to get enough light so they just stop. That's the outer weedlines. Fish there! Touch the bottom too and into the weeds. Senkos wacky rigged are surprisingly weedless with how the hook hangs upside down on the retrieve (with the right touch) and tubes as well... and both can be rigged weedless for heavy weeds.. see my pictures.. should catch some monsters on Demontreville. I have luck at shallow weedlines as well.. where sand or gravel turns to weeds going deeper starting from shore. And points.. and humps.. so many posibilities...Search the forum! A wealth of info here.

I know many use different lines.. and someone would disagree.. but I suggest this for super clear lakes.. 3Lb fireline (some mono spooled on first so it doesn't slip) and then uni to uni knot on a 5-6 foot flourocarbon leader (8lb or higher for heavy cover).. see my tutorial page for the knots. (Fluorocarbon in case you don't know is nearly invisible in water- Berkley makes Vanish which is good). A dab of super glue on the uni knot and I've never lost the leader (at the knot anyway)!

Of course there are large skirted spinnerbaits (also surprisingly weedless) and crank baits.. but I don't know enough about them to tell you much. I should learn more on those. But I have great success on plastics that I never get the desire to experiement.

My 2 cents. Good luck!

ham let me say welcome. Not sure if you have lurked around here much but there is more information in these pages about specifically targeting mn bass that it should be put in a hard copy and sold. Look at wayne ek (agape's) article about jig worming too. So much good stuff here welcome and take a couple of hours and just read. WOW there is some stuff to be learned. There are some sows from what i hear in those to lakes though. Good luck and good learning. ike

Thanks for Web link very nice for a beginner like me. Do you have any good spots to start Demonterville or Olson. When you fish deeper water is the boat on shore side or deep side? So many different plastics are Senkos (worms).

I have been reading here for 2 years. Its just hard to understand when you don’t know the lingo sometimes. Do you have a link for those pages?

For help on Demontreville do this.. click "search" (link in blue up top) and enter Demontreville in "Keyword Search Term".. then click the box "in subject" and then change it to 4 years or something other than 1 week in the "newer than" and you will get LOTS of results and great things to read. I just tried... lots of posts and discussions. Just spell Demontreville right!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
