Young apple trees

Recommended Posts

Bailey nursery is in the Stillwater MN area. They have some good stuff and have been around for a long time. I too had a dang deer snap off the leader on my newest Honeycrisp! You would think in town I would be able to keep them away. Now I have an invasion into my orchard. Time to set up a trail cam and see what I have to deal with.

If the leader does get snapped it will sprout again but not grow too straight without training. Best thing will be to choose an alternate leader if possible. If it was truly the top branch and nothing is close then just let it be and see how it grows. Cut it off at an angle though as that will allow the sprouts to grow up and not just blossom out.

Ok here is one of them. Made by Bonide. Fruit Tree Spray Concentrate.

Active ingred.:

Captan 11.76%

Malathion - insecticide- 6%

Carbaryl 0.3%

It is sold by other makers too. I have some by Gordon as well. Similar stuff. I have gone through all my bulk stuff right now and cannot find a good place where I can get my sort of quantity at a decent price. So the concentrate is an option.

Dosage is 1.5-2.5 Tablespoons per gallon.

this stuff is good for fruit trees, flowers, fruits and evergreens. Insect and disease control.

Sorry for the delay. smirk.gif

Just noticed the deer did a little trimmin for me this last winter mad.gif Think I'll have to pick up a few more this week and get them in the ground. Finally got some fencing material and will have to get rockin on that.

Am also gonna remove all the blossoms later this year as suggested earlier.

One thing You can do is after the leaves fall off is to take some heavier paper or wax paper and fold over the lower branches and staple over the buds. will see a difference in the spring if the deer are bad.

Another real cheap alternative is to zip tie up the branches (kind of like a Christmas tree) and wrap tar paper around the tree and then zip tie them again to hold the paper on. I have been doing this for a few years now until the trees get started. Its little work but works great and is very inexpensive! Good luck!

Thanks for the tips guys. Another question, I have some 10-10-10 or something like that fertilizer and am assuming now would be a good time for it? In the past I've put the fert right in a pail of water - a fair amount dissolves, the rest sits on the ground which is cool.

BTW - I bought another pair of those MN apples trees, you know, them thar Haralsons wink.gif

fertilize with your triple 10 if that is what you have but in july august give it another nice shot and rigt before leaves turn make sure to do it again lightly. will help with winter hardiness and spread it under the drip line of the tree. drip line is if a drop falls off the furthest leaf it will hit the roots is what they say for how far it goes. Spread it out not just next to the trunk.
