advice on new spinning rod

tjsker

Question

I'll be going for walleyes on the Whitefish Chain this coming June and plan to use the technique my guide showed me last year of pulling a Lindy/Roach type of rig just off the bottom and occasionally dropping the weight to feel the bottom. What lenght of a rod should I use for this? Any rod recommendations?

Berkeley has one for the purpose you describe with Gary Roach's name on it. I have one that's 6'2 and another that's 6'6. They are very good rods for the price.

tjsker, The 7ft rod is perfect for that fishing.Get something that is probly medium-medium light with a fairly fast action tip so when you feel the bite the fish won't feel you.If money is no object try that Legend Elite by St.Croix Es70ml 7 fter nice rod or the same in the avid series you wont be dissapointed good luck.

All I use for lindy rigging is a 7 foot rod. When fishing is tough or you are fishing very clear water, I like to use a long florocarbon leader and the 7 foot rod helps to make the leader more manageable. I use a St. Croix Avid series Medium light.

Thanks to all above for the information. When Sam Anderson was down here in Lincoln, NE last week, he said he uses a 7ft rod also. So I think my wife is going to get me a St. Croix AS70MLF for my birthday (I won't tell her about the new reel she got for my birthday though).

One suggestion- give my dad a call. He builds custom made rods and can get the exact blank for the rod you mentioned. It's a guarentee that he'll get it for you at a cheaper price than you'll get in a store and it'll be personalized and with whatever color windings you'd like too. His name is Rod (seriously) and his number is (218) 891-4415. I have yet to ever hear of anyone who has been even a little bit disappointed with one of his rods.

He builds great rods! I would highly recommend them.

For bait rigging and light jigging a 6' 6" med is a good bet. Short vertical jigging situations going with heavier jigs or blade baits (3/8-5/8) a 6' to 6' 8" med/Hvy is my choice, especially with supper braids like FireLine.

Scoots Dad builds some awesome sticks, worth a look for sure!

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
