Bullheads as cut bait?

Like Dennis mentioned in a different post, some of the info you read in these forums gets mish-mashed together. This is one of those pieces of info.

Are bullheads good catfish bait? YES! Bullheads are a great live bait because they are very hardy, lively, and provide great action in the water. Live bullheads are commonly used to fish Flathead Catfish, with the occassional bruiser channel cat taking the bait as well.

But I can count on 1 hand the number of channel cats I've caught on live bullheads this summer so far. There are much better baits than live/cut bullheads to use for specifically fishing channel cats.

Cut sucker, cut creek chub, cut mooneye, cut goldeye, cut shad, and even frogs are all much better baits.

If you are having trouble with Bull heads as bait, try to snip off the fin part of the tail before you toss them out.. This will cause them to thrash about more as they are trying to move about which will bring in more interested fish.

So how about maiming the bullie just enough to get the juices flowing but not killing it?

Still, there is better bait that has a better scent. Live bullhead is great flathead bait. There are plenty other better choices for channels. Channels rely on their sense of smell far more than flatheads. I suspect flatheads with their lateral line, "hearing" more than probably any other fish. That's why bullheads work so well.
