Trolling motor for small boat?

I am looking to get a reasonably priced new trolling motor for my 14 foot fishing boat. I dont need a foot pedal or remote operated unit, just a stern mount tiller. I have an old Mercury Thruster (1970s vintage) at my cabin that works just fine although I have no idea how many pounds of thrust it has. I am looking to get one for the boat I keep down in the cities too. Are the 30-36# motors for $100 completely useless or will they push a small boat just fine? Any input you have would be great, thanks~Dan

I'll second the $100 minnkota 30 lb'er. I clamped it on the bow of a 1950's Alumacraft, it's perfect. The high speed setting is enough to sit you down if you aren't careful turning it on, and the low speed is perfect for crawling bait rigs along. It's got 5 speeds. I wouldn't think twice on this one.

Yup, I have a a Minn-Kota Endura with 38# of thrust. I found it brand new in the box at a pawn shop. $100 well spent in my opinion.

It moves me along quite well in a 1982 14 ft alumacraft v-hull with bench seats. Even with 3 people in the boat it does just fine.

I had a Minn-kota transom mount for years on my Lund 14 foot deluxe.

Worked very well until I upgraded to a bow mount after some "remodeling" of the ol' girl.

I do believe I still have it hanging in the basement if you're interested.
