Help with Pike baits for Canada trip....

Recommended Posts

Heading up past Sioux Lookout for a week of fishing with my Dad for Father's day this Friday. Most of the time we will be fishing for walleyes and smallies, but I would like to make an attempt at some pike. I've never caught one over 5#. No muskie in the lakes as far as the species guide says.

Other than a few spoons to toss around, what would some recommendations be for some baits to pick up? I went to Fleet Farm last night and didn't expect the big bucktails to be $9 each so would like to make an educated purchase.

Maybe a few larger Raps?

Again, 98% of my gear is walleye and panfish, with 1% for trout and 1% a few daredevils I've had since I was a kid.

Thanks

Penguin

I'm no pike expert, but I would suggest some small tandem spins/bucktails. Chartreuse and orange works well. So maybe a black bucktail/spinner with bright blades. Also, if you have any Rattle Traps, those usually work wonders on walleyes, smallies, and pike. That would be a great pick up if you didn't have any. I'm sure others on here can suggest a few other things. Hope that helps.

Canada? Pike? You have to have a Five of Diamonds dare devil, it's like commandment number 8 I think. wink.gif I would also look at some of the bigger Rapalas such as the x rap, super shad raps or husky jerks. Also buy two bucktails for pike, Mepps Tandem Musky Killer; one black and one white. Pick up a spinner bait that has a big willow blade and heavy head that will get down deep in the weeds.

I spent an entire week in Canada using nothing other than the 1oz Daredevil, chartreuce with the 7 dots. Didn't have much paint left by the time I was done with it, but the pike didn't care.

I also like the bigger Johnson's silver minnows. Can cast in any wind, and rip across the cabbage or right thru it. Single hook makes things easier when you're handling a lot of fish in a day.

Wish I was going, I'm jealous!

I would bring the following:

1. Selection of spinner baits (willow blades in gold or silver)

2. Johnson silver minnows

3. Musky Buck b-tail (small size) in black/orange

That list is all you'll need. I don't recommend cranks for a couple of reasons...you're going to catch a million snot rockets so multiple hooks create problems...and you're going to loose some so $$$ add up. Try to stay on the larger side for bigger fish...either way you shouldn't have any trouble breaking 5#. cool.gif

Get yourself a Rapala silver minnow too. Perhaps a couple of them... that is if you don't mind digging out up to three treble hooks.

I use those all the time and the northerns will just eat'em up on a sunny day.

Any pike I encounter LOVE the Joe Bucher firetiger baby shallowraider. Cast and gives it some twitches and rips and then let it pause. Repeat if needed, but usually you are setting the hook before the repeat step smile.gif We call it the bucher death pause because it is death to the pike....

Good luck!

The best Fishing Lure for Pike I have ever found, EASILY, is a large spinnerbait called the Terminator, buy it in the chartruse pattern...it works in stained water, clear water and is absolutely deadly near and around weeds...Trust me here, buy 2 as well cause if one breaks you will be really mad that your other lures wont be as good
