blueish color to a muskie

Recommended Posts

does anyone know why this muskie would have a blueish color to it? we caught it on waconia sat during the tourney but nobody in the boat has seen one with these colorings, also the tail had a bend in it.

we would appreciate your comments thank's

looks like a big head on a small fish - i would say what ever caused the "bend" also is affecting its eating - slowing its growth which may have something to do with the color - i would say unhealthy fish is the cause - course i am no fish doctor just my guess based on the picture.

Hiya -

A little hard to tell from the size of the photos, but I really don't think that's a muskie. I'm almost positive it's a 'silver pike' - sometimes they're called 'blue pike' as well. It's a genetic mutation pike get sometimes where their pigmentation is totally different. They look blue or silvery, without any white markings at all.

They can occur anywhere, but there are a few lakes in MN that have quite a few of them. Bell Taine in Nevis has a lot of them, and the state record silver pike is out of Snowbank Lake - I think it was 22 lbs. A lake I ice fish a lot has a bunch of them. They're really a cool looking critter.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm
