Wheel Bearing problems

cray

Question

I bought a used trailer last year. The first things I did was repack the wheel bearings. The bearings were really bad and needed to be replaced. one year later my bearings are just as bad as they were when I bought it. I traveled 1500 miles including 1 1100 mile round trip to Canada and launched the boat 10 times. Is this normal? What is going on and how can I fix it?

I would make sure that you had the hub nut tight. I always tighten it snug and back it off to the next notch for the cotter pin. Also how do the Races or how ever that is spelled look. Do they appear to have excessive where on them? Maybe they were worn out and should have been replace last year too?? If they were that could have caused excess play and help were your new bearing out faster. Are your tires wearing ok? If they are then you probably don't have a bend in the axle. But if the axle was tweeked just a little that might have cause problems too. Also could the boat be too heavy for the trailer is it adding excessive wear on the trailer due to its load? Just some idea to look at. Those Canada trips can be tough on equipment for sure.

How did the seals look? I would also look at the spindle where the seals spin, if they are really pitted they will tear up the seals quick and leave you with a seal that lets water and dirt in and that is what you are trying to keep out.

I had a nick in the shaft that was taking my seal out, it wasnt to bad so I just filed it down and have not had much for trouble since. When I took the hub apart the grease had alot of dirt in it and some water. What did you have inside your hub?

If that is the problem and it is bad a welding shop can bronze or braise it and then file and sand it down.
