1999 Lund 1900 Pro-V - Motorguide Trolling Motor 24 v problem

Stu

Question

I have a Pro-V with a MotorGuide 82 lb thrust 24v digital steering bow mount.

The guy I bought it from had the motor hooked up in 12 v to only one battery. I have tried to wire the batteries in sequence and have checked with enough people and manuals to know for sure that I have the batteries wired correctly and have a proper in-line fuse for a 24v system.

The problem is that when I try to plug in the bow plug at 24v, the plug smokes and has melted one prong of the plug. It is a four prong male outlet and the plug that is wired to the trolling motor has one red + and one black - .

I am going to replace the plug with a better one.

Is there a 12v/24v switch ot the boat or motor I am missing? I don't know where it would be.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Stu

Thanks, Del.

Since my last post, I dug through the boat manual again and found that the orange wire on the 4 prong plug I have is for 24v and the red is for 12v. I am wired to the red, and that is the prong that smoked. Could it be as easy as using the wire connected to the orange? I don't know why a different wire on the same plug would matter. They look the same.

Thanks,

Stu

This is from memory, and so might not be totally reliable. There are 4 prongs on the connector. I think at least one type of connector has an internal short beween two prongs. Depending on how the batteries are connected to the plug and the internal connections in the plug, there could be a short. It would be easy to check with a multimeter.
