Replacing steering cables in boat

Lost

Question

Today I was working on loosening up the steering on the boat. I did another "oops". Yeah, the word that you don't want to hear a surgeon say while he/she is performing surgery.

Anyway, as I was trying to work the steering to where it would move fairly smoothly, I heard a "snap" underneath the dash. I reached down there and pulled on something that was hanging.

It came loose from where it was easily and as I pulled it out, I found out that it was the steering cable, no longer hooked up to the steering column. Uh oh.

So, how do I fix this? Where do I find replacement cables? Or will I need to go hydraulic (too expensive for me right now).

Thanks S.T......

Lost, if you can come here and look at them, I might have what you are looking for.

But CHECK LENGHT of cable forst, I have quantity but not many lenghts.

Worse gets worse you will end up with a new helm, which will cost you less than cable alone at dealer.

Thanks! I'll need to measure and really check things out. I want to get a new steering wheel on there anyway. The one I have seems to be bent up and appears to be mounted at an angle to the left. I was hoping to mount it at a different angle.

Sounds like what happened to me.......... Apparently the steering cables are designed to get really stiff when they wear out. Be glad that it finally snapped when working on it and not while driving..... I was in a small channel and going slow when it happened and was able to throw it in reverse to prevent slamming the rock shore!

Well, the boat is 38 yrs old and hasn't been used since the late 70's. No wonder the cable snapped.

Val, I'll hopefully have the measurements tomorrow. I'll e-mail you. I'm hoping to be down yonder in 2 weeks. Hopefully you'll be open on the weekend or maybe you can ship to me before then?
