Which Lk Michigan port to fish for salmon, with camping?

Recommended Posts

I need help.

Usually, we trip out to Bailey's Harbor in late July, use a campground, and fish from there. This year, its all different. My wife will have a seminar in Milwaukee, and we'll head out fishing after that. Today, I got a marina in Milwaukee to agree to house my camper and boat for two days.

HERE'S WHERE I NEED HELP.

My wife's seminar is July 11-12. From there, I'll head North, but to which port? Port Washington, Algoma, Kewaunee, TR/Manitowoc?

Does anyone know of a good port to fish out of 7/13 - 7-17, with a good campground nearby?

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Kewaunee and Algoma both have camping. I would suggest Kewaunee if it's tenting and Algoma if it's a truck topper.

Both facilities are good. I really like the Algoma one as you can pull your boat right on next to your site, and I like the Kewaunee one as it's grassy, right next to the fish cleaning station/boat launch(but not too close).

Both are within walking distance of restaurants and bars.

If you need tips for fishing, let me know!

Hammer em':

Thanks for the reply. I got a reservation for my pickup camper at Big Lake Campground - a mile South of Algoma.

Now I have to find a way to figure out the salmon fishing over there. It seems the lures are so much different than what we use here.

Do you know if there's a tackle shop in Algoma?

Yes, there are 2 of them, and you are very welcome to check out also the hardware store.......let me know what's your impression grin.gif

Anyway great choice, if you cannot get anybody to help you with lures, ask the stores they will help you a lot.

I did stay at Captain K, and Roger (the owner) really helped us a lot getting the right presentation and what to use. After the first day of failure we started getting VERY good results....I can't wait to go back.

Evn,

Here is a general list of what I use out there, and over the past few years it's been pretty productive.

Somewhat similar to lake Superior.

Flashers-

Generally hotspots have been my best. Green/glow is fantastic. Also white prism has produced pretty well. The standard silver is ok as is chartruse and orange. I know others will use a variety, but these are my standby's.

Lures-

Flies-I generally tie my own flies. I prefer green, green/gold, aqua, and white/green. As you can see, there is a pattern here. If you tie your own, use the best hooks you can afford.

Spoons- spoons are by far my top producer day in and day out. However I do something a little different than most. I run a flasher/spoon combo. Works awesome!!

Spoon brand doesn't really make much difference. Color however is VERY important. I would purchase a variety of colors, but predomanentely in blue, purple, red and some green for kings and orange for the steelhead. Also, if your not catching fish, adjust your leader lengths. I prefer 24-36" leaders.

Blue/glow white has been a top producer during low light periods as has a modified purple/black with glow lattice. During the day though, greens, purples, reds ect. work well.

I will also on occassion run J-plugs. Haven't had great success with these but I don't have a lot of experience with them either. They do however catch big fish!

Riggers are good, dipsy's are good, planners will catch fish, but generally not in close this time of the year(unless on lead core) lead core is good ect. You get the idea. I usually fish alone and run downriggers and maybe one dipsy until it tangles my lines.

2 more pieces of advice slightly different than Superior. Trolling speed is VERY important. I generally run 2.3-3.0 mph. 2.7 is generally the best but vary it up. Secondly, put on some good fishing line and check your drag before you head out. A 20# king will eat you up if your not ready!!

Algoma hardware is a pretty good place. I generally shop in Appleton, at Fleet Farm or Gander.

Good luck out there. I probably will be around quite a bit in July, and if you want a partner or would just like to meet up an afternoon and fish seperately and share stories, I wouldn't mind fishing Algoma.

Cheffrey:

Thanks for the number. I was going to post one today, asking for just that.

Just got back from a couple windy days off Sand Island. Had a great time on the water for the 4 windy hours we spent on the lake.

I'll contact you in a week.

Thanks

Ev

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
