Handheld GPS receiver/MMC chip question

Ok, I'm the newest guy on the block who is going to purchase a new GPS unit soon. I need it for hunting season.

After reading and reading on this topic: I still have one basic question ...

Do you have to purchase a Lowrance handheld model in order to use the MMC lake chips?

I owned a Garmin unit and liked it previously. Initially, I'm partial to another Garmin unit. If the answer to my first question is 'Yes' (as I think it is), are the Lake Master maps available for purchase on this site of comparable quality with similar user features? Hence, if I chose another Garmin unit, I wouldn't be limiting myself.

Go to http://Minnesota-lake-maps.com

Click the "ProMaps" link then the link that says:

"Garmin ProMap Data Card or CD ROM"

Garmin is a good fit with the lakemaster & ProMap Series lake maps.

I don't think the lake map MMC chips are compatible with handheld units.
