Year of Yamaha

I have what i thought was a 1995 Yamaha 50 hp tiller. I had to remove the lower unit the other day and the diagram in the shop manual did not match the motor. It didn't mention the bolt under the trim tab or having to disconnect the shift linkage. Is there a "vin" number or something that I can look at to find out what year the motor really is?

There should be a sticker with serial number on transom plate, just below steering tube (right or left side), it should be very visible.

The last digit of the model number is the model year.

N = 1984

K = 1985

J = 1986

H = 1987

G = 1989

F = 1989

O = 1990

P = 1991

Q = 1992

R = 1993

S = 1994

T = 1995

U = 1996

V = 1997

W = 1998

X = 1999

Y = 2000

Z = 2001

A = 2002

B = 2003

C = 2004

D = 2005

Thanks I'll take a look when I get home. Is it possible that the shop manual is wrong?

The shop manual will reflect year of motor, if you don't have correct year the manual will be for another motor.

OK Apperenty i have a '94. The diagam at the end of the section is correct but the directions on how to remove it are not.
