Battery

Thomas

Question

Hi, I really liked the Trojan battery (same battery for 3 years), but looking for a lighter battery. I was looking at Cabela's AGM battery. Anyone use one before, and do you recommend it or not?

I bought a pair in 2000 for my 24 volt bowmount. They were made by Exide. I don't know who makes them now. They started losing some capacity last year and I may replace them this year. When I replace them I'll at least go AGM and most likely from Cabela's. AGMs are nice. No fluid to check, can mount at any angle if needed. I would definitely recommend them. Just make sure your charger can charge them the right way. They need a different charge sequence than a gel cell. Ask the charger's manufacturer.

I put in the Cabela's Group 27 AGM Batteries and the Prosport 20 dual bank charger last year. IMO I won't go back to a non sealed battery again.

I had to replace batteries every other year and the cabela's batteries have a 3 year warranty, but all of the research I have done on the agm and spiral cell (Optima) batteries for the extra cost they are worth the price, and I know Cabela's stand behind their product.

They are not lighter then an ordinary wet cell they are 65 lbs apiece.

I didn't have to do anything to the charger, it was set for the AGM batteries, but if the were the gel cell there is a jumper on the charger to cut.

The resort we go to in June has GFI outlets close enough to the docks that I can plug the boat in with a heavy extention cord and charge them overnight ( the charger is fully distributed 20 amps) so it faster recharging.
