Trolling Rod Line Preference

Big-Al

Question

I know that there have been posts about this subject in the past, but a search did not turn up what I was looking for.

What is your preference on line type for a trolling rod, used both with a downrigger and without. I'm thnking of the 12 to 16 pound range. Some on the Lake Superior, but mainly inland lakes for walleyes.

Big Al,

I used to do a lot of Superior fishing when I lived on the North Shore during the summers. We always used mono, like 20lb test, if I recall, for downrigging with the long downrigger rods. The stretch of mono is important for downrigging, IMO. I would not use superlines for downrigging.

However, for walleyes (no downrigging) I primarily use Fireline. I used 6lb diameter last season and this season I went to 8lb diameter. The sensitivity is there to feel/see the lure's action from the rod tip, and if any weeds are fouling the action it is easy to detect.

Here is one post in the walleye forum that people chimed in on. Click HERE

I run all summer on Isle Royale and I use 50# Powerpro on the reels and tie flourocarbon leader material using an Albright knot right to the powerpro, 8-10feet and it will wind right onto the reel. If you are going for other fish on inland lakes you can just use a lighter leader material for lighter tackle, the powerpro diameter should be fine.

Good Luck
