can you sell bullheads that you use for catfish bait without a retailers liscence.? or do you need some kind of permit? was wondering because they are a rough fish and i found a place that i can get them by the thousands.

You need permits for your vehicles used to transport also. Various other 'hoops' to jump thru, restrictions on waters where you can 'take' minnows, etc. Depending where you are you may need local permits for such an operation as well.

Speaking of the sale of bullheads, word on the street is that Moore's Bait and Tackle in South Minneapolis will be starting to sell bullheads in the coming weeks. This will be a great resource for metro cat anglers!

RW is right on Moores selling bullheads soon.

Fisky is right on the licensing, although I am not sure on the price being correct. There are lots of hoops to jump through. I know Minnow licenses range from $27 to $450 depending on which type one would need for what they plan to do ith the minnows. To sell minnows, you need a minnow and retailer license to do so(dont know if there are any other hoops to jump through for private minnow sales to avoid retailer license). Vehicles to transport minnows also need to be licensed through the dnr.

With your fishing license.. your allowed to catch up to 144 bullheads 7" and under by hook and line, dip, or seign net and transport them alive as long as they are obtained in non-restricted water(milfoil, zebra mussels, etc). Any bullheads over 7" is not classified as a minnow and not allowed to be transported alive, and counts towards a daily limit of fish.

Cat rods and reels are pretty cheap.. $20 for a rod(new), and $25 for a reel can usually get something capable of landing some flatheads. It doesnt hurt to ask around, or even on here.. someone might have something laying around that doesnt get used or they *grew out of* that might be sold very reasonably.. maybe even for a trade.

Oh well believe as you wish. I have been involved in commercial bait harvest for quite some time, and the info I am providing is based on what I know of the business, and also comes from revision 2 of the most current minnow regulation pamphlet which I recieved this spring.

There are 2 different DNR permits availiable for selling of minnows within the state. The 'minnow dealer' license and the 'minnow retailer' license. The 'minnow dealer' allows harvesting and sale at wholesale, it also allows for retail sales from 1 location. As I stated previously yes it is indeed 310 dollars. The 'minnow retailer' license allows retail sales at an established place of business, not harvest for resale, this license is 47 beans. There are both 'dealer' and 'retail' vehicle licenses, either or are 15 beans.

There are numerous other licenses needed for import/export and such both into and out of the state, both resident and nonresident, but none applied to Nitefishers original question. I know, for a fact, that resident minnow licenses range from 47 to 700 beans, for instance a resident 'exporting minnow dealer' license, the cost on that one is 700 dollars.

Dave you mention with your angling license you are allowed to possess 144 bullheads/minnows, wrong, actually you are allowed 288.....24 dozen with your individual angling license.

Nitefisher, as for trade/bartering here you go from the statutes in my minnow regs booklet......

97A.015 subd.44. SALE 'sale' means an exchange for consideration, and includes barter, offer to sell, and possesion with intent to sell.

May wanna be careful where you mention your intention to trade/barter as it appears you have already broken the law as it is written in the statutes right here on this thread eh!

Too many licenses available out there. Sounds like the fees have gone up in the last couple years. I believe it was 2 years ago and the export license for minnows was still at about $450.. not $700.. It doesnt surprise me the least bit. I am in no way doubting or condenscending what is stated in your paperwork from the DNR... I didnt expect that much of a hike in the last couple years.

Its starting to make perfect sense why the price on some bait is skyrocketing in the last couple years.

Thank you for clarifying the 288, not 144.. it can hurt to count that many bullheads!

I don't remember it ever being 450, I've never sold outstate and needed one. Permit fee's were jacked up more than just 2 years ago, but no big deal. Fuel cost this year will add to bait price premiums all over. I know a couple of haulers that are no longer gonna bother. I don't feel there are too many licenses, it's all there in black and white, and the resources, especially when it comes down to 'for profit' motives does need its regulating.

i hear and under stand every word you said. there has been no transactions of any kind and there won't be either. i really thank you for letting me know this information. wow the trouble i could have been in thanks thanks thanks. i only have 50 bullies for my own use now and probly will only have that many at a time anyway. now can you tell me what licenses i would have to have in order to do any of what i intended to do.

nitefisher I'm not sure the market is going to be there for you as the water temp warms bullies are pretty easy to catch I would hate to have you spend a lot of money and time and not have the client base to make it worth your while.

fisky needs to go fishing.... smirk.gif

Fisky fished Saturday, Monday, and yesterday afternoons. You are correct I need to get out soon! Roseau river gave up some walleye last nite, water is still quite high there but we managed 8 decent fish 630 till dark.

May have to head for a Catfish hole on that little river soon, I've been eating way too many Walleyes lately.

hey heres a question i was asked the other day. in the minnesota fishing regulations hand book on page 54 the third dot down it says that, licensed anglers and children under 16 may take rough fish by spearing, harpooning, archery, and hand held dip nets in all inland waters, except where takeing fish is prohibited. all rough fish, except cisco (tullibee), may be bought and sold. white fish are not considered a rough fish. is it just that 7" and under bullhead are classified as a minnow. because they are a rough fish and can be sold other wise.?

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
