0 say_der
If an older boat is rated for say 50 H.P. that was for a 2 stroke.A 50 H.P. 4 strokes weighs more. Would the H.P. rating still hold true or should the weight of the motor be factored into what size motor goes on a boat? Thanks.
0 minneman
I own an older (84) lund WS 16, rated for a max hp of 50hp.when I bought it it came w/35hp merc tiller.that motor was perfect for 1 person in the boat, anyway i wanted to upgrade this year and was thinking like yourself about the 4 stroke and possibly a 50 hp. decided after all to go with a used '2000 40hp 2 stroke w/trim/tilt, that added about 110 lbs compared to the previous setup. I love what the 40 did for performance! but the weight issue made me deal with handling the boat different than before and the trailer now is toung light, so I need to load the boat accordingly. I have a transom mnt troller and battery in the stern too.all in all it became a totaly new to drive boat. I cant imagine putting a late model 50 hp on the back as the tag on the boat rates it for. 0 whitebearlakeguy
Look at Honda, there motors are all four strokes and weigh much less than all the others.
0 orngruffee
I just put a 40 horse 4 stroke on an 89 backtroller.I have only had it out once but so far so good.I had a 25 2 stroke on it before.I don't think I want a 50 even though it is rated for it. It has power trim and tilt and there is a very fine line between sweet spot and bow steer. It is about 15 mph faster than the 25.

If an older boat is rated for say 50 H.P. that was for a 2 stroke.
A 50 H.P. 4 strokes weighs more. Would the H.P. rating still hold true or should the weight of the motor be factored into what size motor goes on a boat?
Thanks.
