Locating deep weedlines

Last year I finally started fishing deep weedlines for bass and quickly learned thats the way to go if you wanna consistantly catch big bass in the middle of summer. So my question is how do some of you go about locating these weedlines because they usually arent located on maps and if you dont know the lake like the back of your hand these areas are usually pretty tough to locate?

Thanks!

Great question!!!! Bravo!

One that you could write a book about however. If I am fishing a tournament on a lake that I dont know. I will hit the areas deep that are obvious. Other than that I will hit the shallows! Yes there is a gold mine deep, but spending the time to find them can be hard.

If just out for fun I will spend the time to try and find the mother load. Sometimes I find it, other times I strike out! Usually I will do my best to try and find the best structure on the lake, at that point I will try and find the spot on a spot. An inside turn a point on the point. An underwater camera like an Aqua vu or Marcum is very valuable.

I do have one success story... On the night before a tournament(frankies event)I was prefishing and found a small wiggle in the weedline. Wiggle is the best term I can come up with. I caught one very good fish and dropped the camera to see many more. The next day I loaded up on 3-4 lb fish and won the tournament.

There is a gold mine in the deep, during the summer, but can be as frustrating as anything.

i'll add; while you are traveling across a lake, keep one eye on your locator.( a tip too, is when moving, run at a nice cuise speed instead of flat out. especially if in a bass boat! grin.gif) i have found weed beds/structure this way many times. if you see something on the locator, turn around and check it out.

I will chime in and say that having a color fish finder greatly helps with finding these, since weeds are black and with a "swiss cheese" look on a Lowrance system.

Sometimes they look like long tentacles coming up from the bottom when you are moving and sometimes they look like black cotton candy off of a red/orange bottom.

The best way to understand what your electronics are telling you is to go to a clear lake, and look down while you glance at your fish finder. This will give you a better understanding of what the fish finder is telling you. smile.gif

Understanding this can really be handy when you are fishing murky water, and you are trying to locate the deep edge.

I don't have a camera, but I would imagine that it would not be effective in extremely murky water.
