motor problem question

walleyeking#8

Question

Was just wondering if anyone can help me out. My 25hp johnson starts just fine and idles good as long as it is reved up a little. The problem is is when i put it in forward and try to open it up all the way it doesn't want to go. It just bogs along.

It doesn't seem to miss at all, so I don't think it is a spark plug problem. My neighbor told me he thinks it is the fuel filter. If anyone can tell me what is wrong with it, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise I will have to bring it in. Thanks.

It sounds like time to clean out the carb to me.. just took care of the same problem 2 days ago on my 25 evinrude. It would start 1st pull every time.. but I had more throttle than you(not as plugged).. once I hit full throttle it would bog down.

I pulled the carb and cleaned it out good with carb cleaner.. spent 2 minutes ajusting the lean at the river and I was off fishing and running good.

It doesnt take much to plug something up in the carb. When I took mine apart it looked like you could eat out of it.. there was something somewhere that came out.

i just delt with this this week, i have a 2001 40hp merc and had the same problem, it was under warranty, and to make a long story short, the say it is fixed know but i havent been able to test it yet anyway they said there was dirt in the carbs, so if you have a filter i would change that then you probably have to go after ther carbs also try some sea foam good luck

Most likely a fuel problem. Check the fuel line and bulb for cracks and check all connections. If you have an in-line filter replace it. Check the filter on the fuel pump. If everything checks out your probably going to need a carb cleaning.

I was over at Chad's today and took the carb apart today. He was busy so I told him I would post the finding's for him because he want's to get it fixed soon.

When we took the carb apart it looked clean, no varnish, dirt or anything and the gas smelled good.

I did notice that one of the coil's had a crack in it and thought that could be the problem.

It seems to be running worse now than when he first posted. The rpm's will drop sporadicaly like someone shut it on and off. It does not want to idle down all the way without dieing either. It is also sluggish when reving it up and was probably running about half the rpms it should have on the water last night.

Just wondering what else we should be looking for. Does this have point's in it? I think it is a 1977 so I think it does.

To diagnosis a problem, often knowing all the symptoms makes finding the problem easy. Your findings are different then the original post. According to your post and without you mentioning the cracked coil I'd lean towards and electrical problem. Since you mention the cracked coil I'd start there. Pull the plug wire going to the cracked coil and start the motor. You'll need to put a load on the engine so do so in the water. If the coil is bad you wont't notice any change in performance. Now put that wire back on and take off the other plug wire(the side we think is good) Start the engine,if you can. If its a no go then you've found the problem, you'll need a new coil. Not to speedy for that motor.
