Flat floor kits for small boat?

Mille Lacs Guy

Question

I've got a 14 ft Lund that has the 3 bench seats in it and I want to convert it to have a front platform and take the middle seat out and put a flat floor in it.

Are there kits available to do this? What have other people done to convert his type of boat?

Thanks.

I used to have a 14' Lund & just customized it myself. I didn't go so far as to take the middle seat out, as I thought it should be there for tip over flotation purposes, not that I ever flipped it. I just bought a piece (half-sheet I think) of 3/4" treated plywood & cut it with a couple angles to lay accross the tiny front seat & the first big seat. I just put a couple of medium sized hinges on the bow end & then those lockable twist close hasps on the end towards the middle of the boat, so you could tip it up. I then put a longer hose on my fuel tank & put it under there, but then you have to, by law, carry a fire extinguisher, probably should anyway. I just made drop in floor pieces for the other sections of the floor out of 1/2" I found at my Dad's (cheap), so you could take them out to clean the boat & I screwed a couple of 2 X 2 (I think) stringers to the bottom of them in the deeper part of the boat to level them out. I then screwed some lathe to the floor to box in a spot to drop my trolling motor battery into so it wouldn't slide around. I just painted mine red to match the boat, but you could have carpeted them easy enough. It worked pretty well & probably cost me less than a $100. I've seen the front platform done with a piano hinge on the wider seat, so it just opens to the front, which might be better as you don't open it on the lake generally anyway & that bigger hinge made it a lot more solid. I had a permanent pedastal bolted, not screwed, to the middle of that platform.

I did it the easy way. I bought a new lund with a flat floor, seat on each side in the back, livewell on one side storage on tne other in the midle and a bench seat in the front. Nice boat for a 14 footer. At least I can get up and walk around if I want.

One piece of advise though. In the almost 20 years that we've been doing this kind of work, we've never seen good results from treated plywood. It tends to crack more quickly, it is very prone to warpage, and it is difficult to get to take paint or carpet glue. We have always used BC grade plywood, which is what the manufactures all use. For better longevity, you can take it a step farther and penetrate the topside thouroughly with either a resin-based carpet glue, or catylized fiberglass resin. To date (knock on wood) no pun intended grin.gif, we have never had a boat come back with a rotted floor using this method. Good luck with the project. Hope this helps.
