What do i need to use my marcum LX-5 for open water. I have a 1982 sears fiberglass boat that i get to use for free and don't want to spend alot of money on a locater as the boat currently has no battery or trolling motor.

Well, you're already set to go actually. You could just hang the ice transducer over the side of the boat. Take your depth readings and see if any fish are there. Slow drifting, that may be good enough without spending any money. For slow trolling, maybe duct tape the ice transducer to a pole and C-clamp the pole to the transom. Just a couple ideas for you without having to spend money.

Or, spend maybe $70 (I'm not positive) and get the high speed transducer and mount it on the transom.

I love using my LX-5 on the boat for open water use. Last year, I had the LX-3 on it, and while fall fishing for 'eyes up in Canada, I was actually vertical jigging with some spoons and nailing them. I saw the fish on the Marcum, and placed the jig right at their noses!!

Here is my LX-5 mounted on my small Lund, right next to the Hummingbird. I use both at the same time....

In case I want to use my Marcum on a buddy's boat, I made a portable transducer holder. It is held on the boat by a small C-clamp. I glued a small bubble level to the top of the transducer, so I can adjust it to get the maximum signal strength.
