LP tank

CRAPPIEBAIT

Question

I just bought 2 new tanks over the summer.Well I just used up all the LP in the first tank (steaks 1/2 done) so I hooked up the other "new" tank that is full.Everything fired up o.k. then about 10min. later, the flame was out.Well as I went to shut off the main valve,I noticed the regulator was froze. So,I let it sit a minute and fired it back up.Then I shut down the main valve again and the flame kept burning.

WHY ????????

Your tank may be overfilled, which shouldn't happen with the new valves. Did you have the tank purged before the first fill?

One of the best things I've ever bought is called a Steak Saver. It's a small attachment that will hook to the grill and a disposable tank. I usually keep it in the camper as a backup in the fall and spring to make sure we've got cooking gas or to run the furnace.

The new tanks with the overflow protection device need to be opened very slowly. I can't remember what the exact reason was for it but it was in on the tank label or in the ownwers manual for my weber grill . I've had a problem once when the flame never did heat up but it was lit , thought It was emty. Took it to the station and he weighed it and said it was half full and I explain what it was doing, he hooked up a nozle to purge some air/fuel out and worked great

I think the problem might be that you did not purge the tanks. When you buy a new tank at the store they are full of air.The new opd tanks you need to put a attachmet inside and open the valve to let the pressure out then fill them. There is a sticker on there telling you this.

When I've filled new tanks the place filling them has always asked if they are new and if so said they had to purge them first. I would think most places would do that to a new tank but maybe not. I guess it pays to make sure and ask if you have a new tank. Over the weekend my Dad hooked up a new tank that he bought pre-filled to a turkey fryer and the flame would only burn yellow and not blue. Is that caused by opening the valve too fast also?

I dug out the weber hand book for more info I found one statement that says " The burner control knobs most be in the off position before turning on the liquid propane cylinder tank valve . If they are not in the off position when you turn on the lp cylinder valve , the "excess gas flow control" feature will activate, limiting the gas flow from the lp cylinder . if this should occur turn off lp cylinder valve and burner control valves and start over" and also in the trouble shooting chart they listed for a problem"small flame or temp only reaches 250-300 degrees " and list cause as " excess flow safety device which is part of the cyl may have activated" and mention relight procedure as listed prev and also open valve slowly . This sound like this could have been "five bucks " problem

when gas flows from a high pressure to low pressure there is a tempature drop. This is the principal at work in a/c and refrigerators. If it was a new tank and was not purged then any moisture in the tank would freeze at the valve. The frozen water at the valve prevented it from closing all the way.

when a tank is purged they put a small charge of gas in the tank and release it. This purges any moisture.
