Digital Camera's

Any opinions on digital camera's. I am looking at Nikon SLR style in digital. Anyone with any experience. I take family photos and fishing/hunting photos only, but am willing to get into other stuff, so don't want to limit myself. My work has supplied me with two different digital cameras which make their way on fishing trips...shhh! The ones I have, other than not being my own, don't have much for zoom, hence the desire for an SLR. Any help appreciated.
