Hole shot problem

chief20030

Question

I won a 2004 Charger 182 bass boat. It did not come with a motor but it was pre-rigged for Mercury. the boat was rated for a 150 hp. I purchased a 2005 Merc. 150 XR6. with a P23 prop
When I take off (Trim all the way down)the front of the boat rises to a 40 to 45 degree angle and it takes a long time before it begins to come up to plane. just as the boat begins to break over it shoots out on top of the water then runs like a fine tuned sports car.
If I fill one of the rear livewells it will not come out on plane. any ideas to help this problem?

What model prop do you have? On my XR6 I have a 23p Tempest Plus which has three PVS plugs on the prop. They are designed to allow the exhaust through and around the prop during take off to get the rpms up. Any Merc dealer should have them and could explain it much better. This should definately help. Good luck

Just bought a new boat last week and it did not ride right. The Dealer took it out for a test ride and found the motor was mounted in the wrong holes and had to be moved up one set of holes, now the boat runs great. so check that the motor is mounted right, that will take care of your problems. Try moving it up one set of holes..

Does anyone know if there is actually a distance that the prop should be below the boat? or, is it trial and error? I have tried tilt, trim, prop, pitch, size. I too have a problem getting on plane, however, maybe I have all the adjustments that can be made? I have a 1983 16 foot sylvan and a 75 h.p. evinrude, max speed is 34 m.p.h. with only myself in it (I weigh 205 lbs.) for some reason I think that it should be able to go faster? I am thinking about a bigger motor, but, the information plate is no longer ledgible no one seems to know what the max h.p. would be.(the dealers that I have talked to) any info would be greatly appreciated.

stmichael,
The best performance is acheived when the cavitation plate on the motor shaft (the fins above the prop) is at the level as the bottom of the boat.
Chief's plane problem could be just a matter of playing around with the tilt/trim when starting out. I drove a friend's Champion bass boat with a 200 hp, and it acted the same way. Try tilting the motor up at first, then down once you get going.

Do you have a tack on your boat?? You're right it should do better than that. I have a Yarcraft 1890 with a 75hp and can do 30-31mph with three people. One being me at 270lbs. You might be proped wrong, you should be as close to 5800 rpm's as possible.

Chris,
I am hovering around 5800-5900. My prop size that I have ended up with is 17 pitch 14 diameter. When I bought the boat it had a 19 pitch 13 diameter.( that would get me 5300-5500) The 14 barely fits. That is what I was told should work? I do not know how much clearance there should be for the prop, I only have 2-3mm.
Thank you for any input.
Mike
