Harvick wants to stay at RCR

Recommended Posts

Not sure how many people have seen this, but there has been a lot of talk about Harvick possibly signing with Toyota. They finally got together and discussed Harvick's future with Childress.

Note: Childress was unable to comment, so hopefully this next week we will get a comment from him and set this in stone that Harvick will continue to race under RCR! laugh.gif

Harvick wants to stay at Childress

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Kevin Harvick's view from inside the top 10 in the points is pretty nice - so good that he's certain he wants to extend his contract at Richard Childress Racing.

"We have talked," Harvick said Friday before practice at Phoenix International Raceway. "I know the ball is pretty much on that side."

Harvick is considered this year's top free agent, and the one driver on almost every car owner's wish list. His contract is up at the end of the year, and before Friday, neither he or Childress had been very committal on their future together.

All either said was that they had planned to discuss 2007 and beyond sometime this month.

Harvick said the meeting has now happened, and he's told the car owner he wants to stay put. Childress was on an African safari and unavailable for comment.

"There is a seven-year relationship here that first and foremost is the main priority," Harvick said. "I have a lot of friends here ... it's something that we'll - it will be the first thing we try to work out."

So what made Harvick realize that RCR was the right place for him?

For starters, the organization has shown overall on-track improvement this season and Harvick is currently ranked ninth in the points standings with three top 10 finishes. He's dominating the field in the Busch Series standings and has seven top 10 finishes, and is pleased with offseason personnel changes.

He's also convinced it would take years to get back to this point if he had to start over with a new team.

"It's going to be tough to start from scratch, change teams," he said. "You can't ever rule anything out. I want to do what's best for my career and if that's what it takes to do, then that's what we'll do. But the number one priority is to salvage this seven-year relationship and let's build on that.

"I like to win. I don't need money. I want to win races and I want to win a championship, and that's my goal."
