Mounting axel above or below springs?

bigdog

Question

Need some advice. We picked up a covered utility trailer, single axel, 15" tires, looks like a mini horse trailer. Axel is mounted above the leaf springs which doesn't offer a lot of ground clearance and causes the trailer to tilt back a lot when hitched up. I know I can drop the receiver hitch but would rather mount the axel below the springs to gain some clearance. Will this cause me any problems or is there anything to be careful of?

Surface Tension - good grief you'd think I would read what I type - Yes, the axel is currently above the springs. Thanks for the catch, and both of you guys for the advice.

Did you mean to say the axle is mounted on top of the leafs instead of under? smile.gif
It can be done. If theres a hole in the axle to center the spring use it. You'll have to take the springs bolt out and flip that around too so the stud is pointed down. Put a c-clamp on the spring before you remove the bolt.
