Area 223

I don't know anything about Turkey hunting, but in Sherburne County, you have a good share of public land via the Refuge, State Forest and WMA. I don't know if you can hunt these or not. There are also a fair number of farms that direction and I would bet if you ask, land owners will be more than willing to let you have at it.

Refuge is closed to Turkeys but alot of public land to hunt i seen some turkeys on the public land near st cloud. I had to ask farmers because of some coyote problems on my dads land. I wish i could remember the name of the public land near st cloud but cant off hand. Most farmers dont mind letting someone hunt turkeys. Just ask and ask and you will get a big turkey because I did in 223.

The public area near the St Cloud airport is closed to hunting. There is the Sanddunes State Forest that holds birds. Several WMAs near Becker and Santigo hold birds as well.

Good Luck!

If anyone could give me some directions on where these WMA's might be I would gladly buy a round sometime.

Here's a DNR link to the Sherburne County WMAs.

223 WMA list

Here's info on the Sand Dunes.

Sand Dunes State Forest

Also check out PRIM maps for WPA as there are some of these in 223 as well that hold turkeys.

There is a nice WMA a few miles West of Princeton on the south side of 95 that produced two toms yesterday morning and a 3rd ran off. As far as I know, it doesn't get a lot of pressure, but the DNR is doing some burning there so you may want to go during the daylight right before your season to see what is or isn't being burned.

Thank you all for your help. I will be scouting some more this weekend. (got drawn for time 'G')

I actually got the whole week off of work, and my father is going with me this year. Also, Orien Hunter from FM boards is going out with us this year, however, he wife is going to have a C-Section on their second child on May 5th.

CONGRADULATIONS RON! Her first pictures in this world can be next to a huge Tom!

Is the Kunkel area open for area 223? it looks like it is in Milacs county unless the zone is from hwy 95 and south.

Has there been any birds taken from there --- does anyone know?

I believe a small portion of it is in Sherburne County. Most of it is in Mille Lacs County. Hwy 95 runs through Mille Lacs County there.

Here's an image of it. The yellow is the county border. Looks like around 80 acres is in Sherburne County. Although it looks like you'd have to walk through Mille Lacs County to access it.

Its open and my uncle scored and nice tom just east of Kunkle 21.5 pounds 9 1/2inch beard and 1 1/8 inch spurs. That one came out of my old mans back yard and was shot at 1:45pm after the rain this morning. I hunted kunkle and you can come in on the south side but the roads through it are closed but it is open to hunt turkeys.

I guess I dont understand your post Monstermoose78. He got one just east of Kunkle? Did you see any in Kunkle?

I understand that I should come from the south side and walk the roads to where I might hunt. I assume walk to the other side and hunt close to the fields???

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
