What is the difference in height for a short or long shaft motor?

How do I know if a short shaft would work on my boat? I'm pretty sure it's made to use a long shaft, but I'm wondering if a short shaft could still work.

If the boat is made for a short shaft, would a long shaft work on it?

Measure from the top of the transom to the keel. You'll either have 15" or 20".
