Shell Lake area for opener

Recommended Posts

It looks like I am going to be staying in Shell Lake for opener weekend. I've never fished this area before and was wondering if it would be worth making sure I have the boat along. Actually, I'm sure I will have the boat as I can't foresee myself not getting out somewhere that week.

Does anyone have any suggestions for lakes to fish in this area? Although I typically target walleye, I am not picky. The obvious choice would be Shell Lake. Does it get really crowded on opening weekend? Any tips? Thanks! JH

I've fished Shell L on opening weekend several times - with mixed results. I believe the weather is key to success or a tough time catching fish. If this warm spell continues, I think it might be real good for you. The lake has never been what I'd call crowded on the opener, fair amount of boats come evening but more than enough room. For eyes, the vast majority fish the south bay. Have caught them on a little of everything, jigs/minnows, slip bobber/minnow, and shad raps. Is worth fishing after dark if you got the time.

During the day we always catch nice smallies and plenty of little northerns. Northern suckers under a bobber get both, including almost all of our smallies over 17". The other good tactic for smallies is working Husky Jerks or other suspending stickbaits. I will be chasin longbeards on the opener or else I'd show ya the super secret hot spots wink.gif

Thanks Cooter,

After I posted I did a search and founds some tips, and got some good info...much of it from you. Thanks for the advice. Right now, it looks like I'll be putzing around out there on that Monday, the 8th.

My good friend and fishing buddy co-owns the AmericInn in Shell Lake and would like me to take him fishing. (He owns the hotel, but doesn't live there, so isn't familiar with the lake.) We'll probably give it a shot. Thanks again.

G & G,

I remember talking to a guy who fished the lake a bit and he said that there were cribs out there that always held some decent fish. He used a aquaview and always saw some nice smallies and eyes hanging around them.

Yepper, lots of cribs on the west side of the lake near town as well as the southwest shorline between town and south bay. Also cribs on the two main points(Rolf and Morley?)

Best of luck on the opener there! In past years, the weather has had a huge effect on how easy it is to fish the lake, being a big bowl and all. High water, wind, and rain has been tough conditions!

Try the east point north shore which divides the two lakes. Don't be afraid to cast out to deeper water as well, 8-12 feet as Shell Lake is pretty clear. These smallies spawn deeper than you think.

This is also true on the north shoreline. Fish around the point on the north side with husky jerks (old rapala brown /crawdad color has been great) or other rogues. Pearl has worked too. Keep the bait moving if conditions are favorable. Tubes can be a good idea too, make sure you DRAG them though, don't be hopping them, those smallies don't like that in my experience! Again, don't be afraid to fishing these in 8-12 feet of water.

last spot to check is on the east side, there is a small point somewhere between the north and south shore on the big lake, and there is some good cuts on it, with a crib. Seen some good smallies come out of there as a crib(s) reside in the area...

Also, have put an aquavu down on those cribs and it's amazing the fish that surround those things. catching them might be another matter but fun to check out!

Let me know if anyone has any hints for Clam Lake or Devils lake closer to the Yellow lake area. Private messaging is cool too, hope this all helps! thanks!

Cathchin'

My experience on Devils is dragging big Daredevils in 12 ft. of water with minnow heads on the hooks!!!!

For Clam, I really like throwing the Timber Doodle!!

Anyways, All fun aside, Shell is an awesome smallmouth lake if you have favorable conditions. My favorite spots are in the smaller basin. Try all different sizes, colors, and brand names of jerkbaits. Vary the retreive speed from cast to cast until you find a cadence that works. I also have had good luck cranking around any reeds that you can find. Also try rattle traps, in craw color, and slow rolling spinnerbaits of of the 1st break!!!

Hope this helps some!!!

And Catchin'---I will see you on the Water!!!!!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
