My wife and I are thinking of wanting to fish somewhere along the Missouri river system in SD this summer. We have a pickup truck and would like to camp. Problem is, we don't know anywhere to camp where we can fish too.

Any suggestions? Web addresses?

Feel free to post here or email me at [email protected]

Thanks in advance for your help.

Randy

Hi

Do a yahoo or google search for "South Dakota public fishing" There is a pdf file that shows all public fishing accesses and most public camp grounds put out by the South Dakota parks or GF&P When you find it you can download and save or print or both but there are a lot of pages if you decide to print it all. The last 5 or so pages pertain to the MO. river . I think it can be requested from the GF&P also.

Another option is buy the Missouri river maps available they show most public landings and camp grounds on the MO. The maps are sold in many different sections so make sure you get the one for the area you want too fish!!

Hope this helps! smile.gif

Do you have a boat? They are plenty of camping spots on along the river. There are some state run and Corps run camp site. Fort Thompson has a Crops campground that is right below big bend dam. Excellent shore fishing at certain times of the year.

Send me an Email and I can send you a link to all the SD state park campgrounds.

There's also a state campgrounds below the oahe dam. There is a marina good resturant bar and bait shop right there. Stay at one of their cabins every april. Nice facilities. You can fish the marina, lake sharpe or above the dam on oahe. All within a couple of miles. Just do a search on oahe marina and it should get you the info. Also just 5 miles to Pierre.

Randy, I grew up ten miles from the river. The best place for you and your wife is Gettysburg,SD. The state campground is called west whitlocks. It has clean showers, campground host, no misquitoes, and a ranger station. Mr Walleye placed 2nd in the pwt 3/4 of mile from the campground. The east bank is sand for a 1 1/2 miles (easy snaggless fishing for your wife) The best fishing is there is June 15 to July 5 because the walleye move downstream. There is also a store with gas, food and beer right by the state ramp. The best steakhouse in SD is 2 miles away if walleye over the fire isnt good enough. This is where hwy 212 meets the river. My wife and I have gone there the last 7 years camping. We also bring home our limits. Bring 2oz bottom bouncer with orange (not red) or chat. hooks with 1/2 a crawler. 4-6ft leader, note a bead before the hook always helps. NOTE stay away from the lower river below Pierre SD, the fishing for walleyes really drops off after June 13 in the lower river. any ? [email protected]

Uh oh? Did somebody mention Bobs Steakhouse? That place is incredible. To die for...

Steve, Welcome again to the SD forums. Thanks for sharing the information. I've always enjoyed the Gettsburg area. Last time I was there, we were chassing Salmon in Whitlock Bay. Every heard the story "should have been here a week ago"?
