Musky "Rookie" Questions

Recommended Posts

The Big V....ah just like a little peice of heaven.

You should have a good trip, and I would bet good money one of those Big V fish will scare the heck out of you. I don't know how they do it but those fish just seem to appear out of nowhere. Gives me goosebumps!

Sounds awesome! Biggest gamefish I've ever caught was a 38" pike, and when I saw that thing, my knees were a'knockin! I've never seen a musky follow my bait, much less caught one, so I hope it happens. My bro caught a 43"er on LOW about 10 years ago, and that thing looked huge. Can't imagine a 45" fish or bigger. Okay, I'm officially pumped!!!!! Talked myself right into it! grin.gifgrin.gif

No whats worse is when you are pulling in a topwater and you see that first bump or surge on the water then the fins come out of the water a little all while the fish is gaining speed and closing in on it's target. It is now close enough you can see it's mouth start to open and the fish curls up like a rattle snake ready to land the final blow...and it turns and swims off.

It will mess you up, therapy time messed up.

A musky boiling behind my topwater lure...now that would nearly have to be the ultimate experience, except for actually getting it to hit and catching it! I had a pike do that once and man was that cool! cool.gif Just got done lining my rod with Power Pro. I tried following the directions for the Polamar knot, and thought it would be simple, but the instructions weren't detailed enough for my simple mind, so I tied on a Uni knot which seems like it will hold well.

Muskies boiling in the water behind your lure, getting one right at the boat on a figure 8....I don't know which would be better really, but I'll take whatever I can get!

By the way, in late August would it be better fishing early in the morning and late in the evening, or would there be a daytime bite? Clouds and wind in the day I assume would be even better, but if it's calm and/or sunny, I wonder if they can be caught shallow during the day?

Tic tic tic tic...c'mon calendar!!!!!!

P.S. - How's that back doin' Jon? Gonna be ready for opening weekend?

This is how I approach it: Get up at 3 AM cast until you have to stop to eat (about 10AM) Troll during brunch, then cast until the supper break then troll some more, then cast until the sun is down and the moon is up and you can keep your eyes open no matter what you do. That way you'll be on the water when they go! grin.gif

On a serious note if its high skies and calm I have always had my best luck pre-dawn to early morning on the V.
