CVA Kodiak

Hi, I have been looking very hard at the CVA Kodiak, any comments from owners of this muzzeloader? Good, bad, tips etc would be appreciated. I have seen that for around the $300 mark they score very well in field tests by some of the more popular gun magazines against muzzeloaders of a higher $ figure. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I bought one in the black/stainless .45 cal. a couple years ago. I have yet to fire it. I plan to break it in soon, I'll let you know. The reason I bought it was exactly what you posted. Inexpensive and shoots just as good as more expensive brands.

I just got a kodiak .50cal in nickle/black a couple of months ago. It is a really great and fun muzzy to shoot. Find the sweet spot in the rifle's powder/ bullet combo and it is just as accurate as the highend muzzys. I really like the pivot action, you don't need a priming tool to prime and deprime it and it don't need one of those plastic to put the primer in. Cleaning the gun is really easy too. I would say it's a 10 out of 10 if you ask me.

Do you measure a powder charge or use the pellets? I haven't shot mine yet, but I have the pellets and the powerbelt bullets and I'm just wondering what I should expect. Did you start at 25 yds? Clean every shot? Etc., etc. Thanks for any info.

I have the Kodiak Magnum in .50 cal. and love it. Great looks, great balance, and no need to worry about getting your primer wet with the crack open design. I shot a doe with it last year at 60 yards and dropped her in her tracks. this past season I dropped a 6 pt. buck with it at 136 yards and he too dropped in his tracks. Very accurate gun, and for $300 how can you go wrong?

I'm sure lunker can answer this but as long as I was here.... I use the premeasured pyrodex (sp.) I load two charges (100 grain equivalent)and start at 50 yards. I actually only sight it in at 50 yards. Last year I sighted it in at 50 and then went to 100 yards and didn't even see a drop on the target. My 3 shots at 100 yards were mixed in with my 3 shots at 50 yards. I run a dry cloth through the barrel after every two shots during practice. But I only shoot it 6 times max during sighting it in. Shoulder can't take much more than that. If you shoot more than that you may want to clean after every shot towards the end of your practice. If anything the nipple will need cleaning before the barrel does. Hope this helps.

I use 100gr. 777 pellets. I don't know anything about powerbelt bullets. I have heard their ups and downs to them, But when I heard that they don't panetrate so good and seem to explode upon impact, with high powder charge. I decided not to try them but don't take it the wrong way, some peoples have had great experiences with them. Powerbelt bullets seems to load very easy and peoples I've talk to say that they can shoot 3-5 times before cleaning the barrel. On the other hand if you shoot sabots you will likely have to clean the barrel after every shots, so you will be able to load the next round. When sighting in, try 25 yards to see where it hits first so when you shoot at 50yrds you'll be on the paper, Then try 100yrds. Every gun shoots different even if they are exactly the same model. Try using different grains of charges/ powders and before you know it, you'll find out what shoots best out of your Muzzy.

I just bought a Winchester Apex...vitually the same gun, very nice looking and handling..have not shot it yet but all the reviews looked good..ordered it from Cabelas bargain cave for $179
