This is kind of interesting. I thought I understood NASCAR's point system fairly well, but I don't get this quirk regarding the 35th place deal this week.

Sterling Marlin is 35th in driver points with 356, but he's 36th in owner's points with 356 and is NOT locked in to the field.

Scott Riggs is 36th in driver points with 355, but he's 35th in owner's points with 386 and IS locked in to the field.

Where'd the 31 points come from? Do they get owner's points for Daytona even though they didn't make the race???

oops, answered my own question... From NASCAR.com:

Owners are rewarded in the points race in much the same fashion but, unlike drivers, they earn points for merely attempting to make a race. If an owner shows up with a pair of drivers, and one fails to qualify, the owner still receives points for the non-qualifying effort.

The fastest non-qualifier on race day earns 31 points for his owner, three down from the 43rd-place points. The scale continues downward from there for all non-qualifiers, with the lowest possible point(s) awarded being one

well, at least now we know.
