Fly Fishing trip help

Recommended Posts

I’m planning on taking a fly fishing trip out west at some point this summer. I’ve never gone on a fishing trip in the mountains before so I need some help. I was thinking about going to Yellowstone some time in June or July but I don’t want to have to fight crowds (like I did Saturday on the Kinnie). So any help would be appreciated. Does anyone have any suggestions on When and where to go?

P.S. We will be driving and only have 4 or 5 days.

Thanks

Ryan

There is a great book by Rich Osthoff called Fly Fishing the Rocky Mountain Backcountry. It's got a ton of detailed information on where to go and how to avoid crowds.

I can't help you as I've never fished out west but once many years ago. Hopefully we'll hear from others who get out there to fish, or used to...

Have fun!

If you are driving out that way there are tons of great spots in that area or on the way there that have little to no people. One of the best parts about a trip like that is stopping and fishing fishy lookin spots. I spent 4 summers as a kid camping and fishing up the rockies from AZ to ND and at the end of the summer camping and fishing my way back down to AZ. You just have to do alittle research and decide if you wanna go to a well known place and fight people or go to a unknown place and fight fish. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Okay Ryan...you say you have 4-5 days to go fishing in MT. It's gonna take you most of a day coming and another returning. That leaves you three days. Go to Bozeman in late June. Go to any one of the flyshops. Thats all you need to do. The Park is busy but you can still enjoy fishing the Madison, Gibbon or Lamar etc along with the other folks. Or you can wander the Bozeman area every day and fish different water. Don't worry too much about catching great numbers of fish; just enjoy the waters. Check with the folks at Dan Baileys and G. Andersons shops in Livingston too. Lots of water...little time. Relax. And for petes's sake turn your hat around so the bill shields your eyes from the sun!! Have a nice trip!!

Thanks for the help. After talking with some friends that will be joining me we decided to go the second weekend in July. It wasn't my first choice but it was all that worked out for eveyone. I like the idea of just stoping Bozeman and talking to some shops. I afraid that the park is going to be crazy on friday and Saturday after the 4th so i think we are going to try and fish the Galaton those days then hit the park on sunday.

Thanks again

I can't wait

Okay. Fish the upper Gallitin...I mean WAY up. Same for the Madison. You'll find a place and the shops will help you. Just be sure you don't ask for a thousand dollars worth of help and leave behind a dollars worth of business. Be nice..not too loud. Wear clean underwear. Don't trespass. And be careful driving up the Gallitin.Oh, and don't lip off to the MT highway patrol guys. They REALLY don't like it.

Have fun.

Spend the money on a guided float trip or two while you are there. The Gallatin is great but it can be busy and the trout can be on the small side. It is one of my favorites to fish while I'm out there because when it gets hot you'll catch a lot but I'd highly recommend a float trip while you are there.

The area around Big Sky is also pretty good. We have fished the Taylor Fork and there are never any people on it--small fish but lots of luck and very easy to wade. There is an Orvis shop in Big Sky. We have used Gallatin River guides.

They have some private land--also some Minnesota ties. (The owner has family in White Bear Lake). Good luck and tight lines!
