Down rigger placement

I have a '04 1775 Pro-V tiller and got a Mag-10 down rigger for Christmas. I want to put the 'rigger on the port side and would like to know if anyone else has this set up and where the down rigger is mounted. Or, what are the "rules of thumb" for down rigger mounting.
