Power augers

Ditto Paul. I too like the fact that the nils cuts faster than anything I have seen, but the big issue here is that it is light and the auger does the work, not the fisherman. Important if your running and gunning all day.

JT, appreciate your opinion, but doesn't strikemaster also sell a 500 dollar 4 stroke auger. I have seen them and they are light , but personally I thought they cut very slow. Also the replacement blades for strikemasters 4 blade unit is a few bucks less than Nils, but Nils your getting an entirely new cutting head, not just the blades. Also, before jiffy and strikemaster came about, no one had heard of them either.

I would like to get this thread back on topic and that is helping "Guppy" find a great "end of the season" deal on a power auger.

However-

1. I believe Strikemaster sponsors the "fastest auger competition"

2. The Nils is a heck of an auger. The biggest thing about Nils is the effort it takes to cut a hole. There is none. Just hold on and go.

3. The Strikemaster Strike-Lite is a heck of an auger too. My dad bought one this winter and I've used it many times. Its just as fast if not faster than my Lazer Mag Express. It also is the lightest auger on the market besides the Nilsmaster. 2 thumbs up from this kid on the Strike-Lite!

What would be a good power auger to buy?

Not trying to be a smart guy , but guppy did also ask the above question. Just voiced my opinion, like everyone else did. Topic did get a little off to the debate side so quess I will shut-up.

Guppy found a deal! Cant go wrong with a strikemaster! Not that I am an expert (an "ex" is a has been and a spurt is just a drip of water under pressure) but I think that he got a pretty good deal. Sounds like the Big 3 all have their supporters, kind of like GM, Ford and DOdge. They are actually all good just a matter of taste. Have a good one and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

Here is my 2 cents...I bought a year end closeout Strike Lite 4 stroke and have used it 4 times. It cuts through the ice no problem, i have used augers that maybe cut a little faster but not much. I put about 1/4 of a tank of gas in it and it has not moved even drilling 50-60 holes. Also not having to mix the gas or have to open the vent to allow air in is another plus. Only disadvantage is the warm up period of about 20 seconds, and having to set the auger on one side the only other downfall.

I have been very happy with my auger to say the least and for 399 it was a good deal.

This post looks like a strikemaster fan club. You cannot go wrong with a Jiffy. Do they cost a little more? Yes. Do you get what you pay for? Yes.I've seen plenty of SM out there and I'm sure they are fine but the ones I have seen didnt have the fit and finish of a Jiffy and their blades are not as maintenance free. I guess I'm the one guy that doesn't prefer them.

I would love a nils, but do they ever go on sale?

One post said they put a couple on hsolist, but I missed the post by a day and someone was saying they saw a price of $380 for a demo unit. From what I've read the nils just keeping getting better to use the more you use them.

Any tips would be appreciated!

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
