Fresh water Shrimp

I have tried them in the past. I thought they were kind of expensive and there didn't seem to be that many?

What I did find out is that the little fish don't know how expensive they are and will eat them just as fast as anything else!

On top of that, I didn't find that they could take a licking and keep on ticking, like a waxie.

Not once did all the above average sized panfish rush from the other side of the lake to eat the shrimp I put down! Thus, I ended my brief affair with using freshwater shrimp!

I have used them in the past on lakes that have a resident population of shrimp and I've had very good luck with them. They are fragile, a small sharp hook is required. I usually try and catch fish on the cheaper and less fragile wax worm first, but there are definitely days where only the shrimp work. In the last 2 years I have tried both fly fishing flies and plastics that look like shrimp with mixed results.

I use them quite a bit. I get them in bulk from Vados Bait in Spring Lake Park. There really reasonable in price. I love them for perch and big gills up here. And as far as I know we don't have shrimp in our lakes. Although we have scuds which look almost the same. i have caught crappies on them but not enough to say they work better than larvae.

I use freshwater shrimp fairly regularly on certain bodies of water. I know of one certain lake that the gills definately show a preference to them. If a lake holds a ample supply of shrimp you can bet I'll have some along. They are delicate and it does get frustrateing at times fishing them but once you get on a good bite on these babies it's all worth the effort and cost. I know alot of the bait stores in Sauk centre and Osakis area carry them.

I have never used them. A friend of mine brought some with last weekend. Unfortunately the fish weren't biting on anything that day.

But my question is 'Can you hook them without killing them? And if so, how?' Several posts have mentioned how fragile they are so I am curious.
