Mr. Heater Malfunction - Repair

Mrfish

Question

I have an older Mr. Heater and when I try to light it the flame starts it looks like its right I turn the thing to full it burns for about 30 seconds and just goes out. I've tried to hold the button down for a longer time but as soon as it begins to warm and I turn it to full it goes out. I can see the flame and it seems right, but it won't stay on. I think its from the thermo coupler being out of adjustment but I don't see how to properly adjust the thing. So does anyone have a suggestion? Has anyone had this problem before? I really don't like the idea of just tossing it away.

You may want to try a new thermocouple or move the one in there now a little closer to the heating grid and pilot as it may be to far away.I would guess if its a older heater and the thermocouple has never been changed that it may be your problem.

There seems to be a wide tolerance for the rubber o-ring and plastic bushing on the extension hoses for the larger tanks that you can hook up to the Mr. Heater. If you are using one of these hoses, incorrect seating of the oring and bushing at the connection can allow just enough gas to get to the heater to light but not quite enough for it to run at high settings. An easy test would be to hook up a new 1 lb cylinder and see if you get the same results. If it improves, when the new cylinder is used as the fuel source, take a look at the oring and bushing on the extension hose. Hope you get your heater running.
