mnvikingsfreak
I found an old 3 or 4 hp outboard motor in the shed last week and my problem is it starts and runs out of the water but when put in the water after 10 seconds it stalls what could be causing this?Any help or suggestions would be great thanks! 0 Valv
I would consider carb rebuild or at least a good cleaning, replace water pump (if it has one), and check fuel hoses and tank.------------------Val Vignatiwww.kvesurplus.com[email protected]
0 wastewaterguru
Too many possibilities..... You have to do a better job of describing. If its been stored a while, the first thing you should do is change plugs and clean the carb and check for a sticking float or clogged needle valve. Also check the fuel system and make sure there is a vacuum break and free fuel flow.Good luck.
0 Surface Tension
You didn't have a load on the engine when it was out of the water. In the water is had a load and killed from lack of fuel. Do what was mentioned in the above posts for starters, along with draining and refilling the lower unit. Being an old motor you didn't have any muffs on it so don't run it out of water anymore. Even running it for a very short time out of water will ruin the impeller. You probably don't have a neutral and just forward gear so take the prop off to keep water in the tank and your shoes dry.
