New Years Outdoors Resolution

Alrighty fellow FMers-

I don't plan on losing any weight this year, or to quit smoking (I don't smoke), or quit drinking, or drive safer, or join an athletic club, or to change my attitude, or any other of those traditional New Years Resolutions!

What I do plan to do is keep fishing and fish more, with friends, family, and some of you guys that I may not even know yet!

A few of my better friends I have now I've met through FM who I may have not known 1 year ago. You never know what might happen!

I've got a couple good friends heading up to my Upper Red ice shack with me this weekend, 1 hasn't ice fished in a long time so this will be fun! So far, I'm keeping up with that resolution.

Anyone else?

You bet I will!!! Just got my new ice auger for xmas (my wife loves me) and as time permits between classes, I will be on the ice up by Thief River. Hoping to make it to red lake once this year when by brother and a friend are up there for an overnighter but that might be it this year. I also have the two of them talked into a day of guided fishing with Wiskers on the Red this summer too. Neither of them have tasted the waters of the mighty catfish and I have every confidence that they will be hooked like we are. I'm also hoping to convince you to come up this summer and help me figure out Pelican Lake at Breezy point. I have heard that lake is a Bass haven and it would be a great time.

Be safe, tight lines, and always keep your stick on the ice.

Many new years wishes to you Hanson, and my your catches exceed your dreams!!

I now have all the basic equipment to Ice fish (rods, tackle, LX3-TC, Portable and Auger) Now I just need to learn where to find fish and after I find them catch them. I am very amateur when it comes to ice fishing. Most I have cought when out is 2-3 small fish.

Something,

Make sure to hit some of the get-togethers and the Ice Leaders events that you'll see posted on Fishing Minnesota. I was in your same exact position last year at this time of the year---all of the necessary equipment finally and virtually no experience except for a once a year winter trip to LOW. By the end of last ice season, I'd fished for cats on the Horseshoe, the backwaters of the Mississippi, Medicine Lake a bunch of times (tipups for northerns, crappies and gills), different trip to LOW and Upper Red as well as the Rush Lake event.

I learned a ton and have alot more to learn.

Right know I'm targeting the Minnetonka walleye search in late January for one as a lake I'd like to fish. The URL get-together is appealing but I'm running into an approval issue with the boss at home. Phalen get-together this weekend sounds fun but I may just hit Medicine since I fished it a fair amount last year. I think I noticed you were from the St. Cloud area and if I were closer, the Horseshoe chain would be somewhere I'd be working on getting to know.

Don't be afraid to ask for a fishing partner on here as I learned more from the guys I met at the events and ended up meeting them other weekends for some fishing or partnering up on the ice. Everybody here is willing to help us newbies to the sport.

Mine is to fish more than last year and that could be a tall order as I think last year I fished approx 60-70 times. With the O.K. from the better half I might just be able to do that. It will take alot of summer fishing as the ice this winter is not allowing me to go as much as I would like. Some day with enough practice I might turn into a good fisherman. Maybe if I fish with Matt Johnson a few times I might get a little better. Iam sure a young pup can teach a old dog some new tricks, right Matt.

Last year I made a resolution to go fishing 50 times in 2005. I made it out 40 times... a little shy of the goal, and with everything else going on, I don't think I'm going to be able to break 50 this year either. I dunno... "fish smarter, not harder???" smile.gif

I have never fly fished before, and I'm going to try it in 2006. I am especially interested in catching carp on the fly.

I want to spend more time on the Minnesota River and try another new angling experience--flatheads.
