Lowrance Transducer

LMITOUT

Question

Anybody know if transducers go bad or get weak? I have a puck style mounted to the bottom of my trolling motor and it didn't seem to work right from new, but for the opener the X65 it's connected to wouldn't mark anything but the bottom while the X85 that I have on the transom marked everything as usual.

I finally just switched the units around to find that the same thing occurred with the X85 when it was on the bow and the X65 worked great on the console so I know it's not the locator. After a while it wouldn't even give me depth and just flashed 59.9 ft.

Any ideas? It seems to "tick" when I feel and listen to the xducer out of the water.

Yes, tranducers can and do go bad. Two things that can make them go bad are if they were ever dropped or banged around. Another reason that can sometimes happen is if the boat is stored outside during the winter. Cold overnight temps followed by a bright morning sun can crack the interior (not visible) portion rendering the transducer useless. These are just two typical causes as they also go bad for other various reasons just as any equipment can fail.

If storing your boat outside in winter, either remove the transducer or wrap in some type of light colored insulation to avoid quick temp contrasts.
