Dumb question?

Question

I have a 17' boat with a 115 on the back, its just too fast for effective backtrolling so I picked up a used 15 horse. I was looking to mount it to the boat and saw the kicker plates at an outdoors store. My question is this, why would one need or want one of those as opposed to putting the kicker right on the transom? They looked to be about a hundred bucks so if I don't need it, I could save some money. Anyone have any experience either way?

My Lund had a 9.9 kicker on it a few years ago but it limited the steering on the bigger motor. It would do a full turn one way but only half ways the other direction. Does your set up have enough clearance between the 115 and the kicker? Mine didn't so I chose to take the kicker motor off and sell it......

If your transom is wide enough and low enough so that there will be no interference between the motors and so that the 15 will reach all the way down below the hull of the boat then you don't need one. Also some people prefer to raise the kicker as opposed to tilting the trolling motor during high speed travel.
